The Wrong Make-Up

Brandon Fleming

Brandon Fleming (1889–1970) was a playwright and screenwriter whose work ventured from time to time into criminal territory. He is perhaps most likely to be remembered for co-writing the 1925 “farcical melodrama” None but the Brave. His co-author was Bernard Merivale, whose other collaborators included Arnold Ridley, later renowned as Private Godfrey in the BBC TV series Dad’s Army. Four years earlier, Fleming had enjoyed some success with a solo effort for the stage, The Eleventh Commandment, which was later filmed.

Fleming wrote the script for a 1933 crime film Mayfair Girl and such “quota quickies” of the Thirties as Great Stuff, Forging Ahead, and The Flaw (a mystery movie which originated as a short story and was remade in 1955 with John Bentley and Donald Houston in the lead roles). “The Wrong Make-Up” is another of his short stories, and it first appeared in the Strand Magazine in 1941.
